Carrowmore Lake is 4 miles long by almost 3 miles wide at its widest point and is the best Spring Salmon lough fishery in Ireland. It holds Spring Salmon from opening day, grilse start arriving in late April, and it gets a run of seatrout from about mid June. Carrowmore has a higher level of fertility than the surrounding peatlands would suggest and it has good hatches of buzzers, olives, mayfly, and sedges. This allows the resident population of brown trout to grow to a reasonable size with trout in the 2-4lb class being caught every season. Carrowmore is a shallow lake all over and this is a major contributing factor in it being such a great Spring Salmon, Grilse and Seatrout fishery.
